What is the HEC Montréal Global Experience Panel?
Our goal is to conduct cutting-edge academic research on work relations between supervisors and employees, on work teams and on customer relations.
In collaboration with a specialized firm, over the past six months we have developed a unique technological research infrastructure based on a survey panel.
The Global Experience Panel will consist of a select group of firms whose employees, supervisors and customers will be surveyed on various themes, including employee motivation, team leadership and work context.
“One of the most innovative aspects of this research program is the way it will dynamically track the evolution of employee–supervisor teams, commitment within work teams, performance, and employee well-being. This is a complex research methodology, and few researchers have the resources to carry out this kind of project,” says Christian Vandenberghe, Full Professor in the HEC Montréal Department of Management and lead researcher in charge of the project.
3 reasons why your firm should buy in
Aside from the obvious academic value of this research, participating firms will derive substantial benefits from this project.
1. Enhanced productivity
The productivity of Canadian firms, unfortunately, is recognized as being lower than that in other major countries around the world. One of the goals of this project is to help firms achieve greater productivity.
The Global Experience Panel will make it possible to build a knowledge base like none other in the world on the dynamics of commitment, performance and well-being within work teams, and on the interface between service employees and customers.
As Michel Tremblay, Full Professor in the Department of Human Resources Management and researcher associated with the project, explains: “The Global Experience Panel will measure employee attitudes and behaviour several times a year. Employees will give their opinions on their team dynamics. One interesting aspect of the project is that each team will have access to the survey results. They’ll be able to compare their results with those of all the other teams, and the company will also be able to compare its performance with that of other participating firms.”
2. Finding and retaining top talent
Today’s firms are working harder all the time to find skilled employees. Attracting and retaining top talent is difficult, and competition is fierce.
Studies by the Global Experience Panel over the next five years will give participating firms valuable information and better equip them to take on these challenges.
3. Understanding employee–customer business relationships
“When companies want to rate their customer service, they mostly gather and analyze customers’ comments. Some look instead at what their employees have to say.
“But very few organizations consider the opinions of both customer service employees and their customers. Here we are referring to sales representatives, customer service representatives, etc.
“This research project will improve our understanding of how business relationships are established and maintained between employees and customers,” says Yany Grégoire, Professor in the HEC Montréal Marketing Department and researcher associated with this project.
How to participate?
Interested in participating? Ready to let your employees voluntarily answer three to four series of surveys a year? The Panel team will provide you with strategic reports on each of the themes examined. You’ll get a concrete view of your performance, since your results will be compared with those of all other participating firms.
Feel free to contact us. The project will be starting very soon, so we’d like to talk with you as quickly as possible. There is no financial commitment on your part – the project is already funded for the next several years.

More details on the Global Experience Panel research project
The Global Experience Panel research project was launched with great fanfare in the fall of 2018.
Funded largely by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Quebec government, the Global Experience Panel will consist of a select group of firms whose employees, supervisors and customers will be surveyed on various themes, including employee motivation, team leadership and work context.
Three HEC Montréal researchers are associated with the project.
Christian Vandenberghe, a Full Professor at HEC Montréal, has published over 120 papers in internationally renowned scientific journals and served as a speaker and trainer on such topics as organizational commitment, employee retention and work performance. Professors Michel Tremblay and Yany Grégoire, both highly active HEC Montréal professors and researchers, complete the team.
Our three researchers focus on organizational commitment, talent retention, employee motivation, customer relations and resolution of service failures.
